Loan Consolidation - Applying Step-by-Step

Application and Assistance

  • E-mail: loan_consolidation@mail.eds.com
  • Phone: 1-800-557-7392 8 am to 8 pm EST, Monday-Friday
  • Web site: www.loanconsolidation.ed.gov
  • Express Phone Application: 1-888-758-9730 (use if you are consolidating Direct Loans only)
  • Application Address: US Dept of Education, Consolidation Department, Loan Origination Center, PO Box 242800, Louisville, KY, 40224-2800

Checklist

  • Have your federal PIN available. Request a duplicate PIN online www.pin.ed.gov
  • Gather loan history (access on the web at www.nslds.ed.gov using your federal PIN). You will need to know the name and address of all lenders as well as your principle balances and any unpaid interest amounts. Your social security number is the account number for your loan.
  • Apply on the web or download paper application. Don't forget the instruction sheet! You can also apply by phone if you are consolidating only Direct Loans. Print and read "Rights and Responsibilities as a Borrower".
  • Mail your completed signed application to Direct Loans by May 1.
  • An in-school consolidation will keep your subsidized loans interest free until repayment begins. Any unsubsidized loans will continue to accrue interest and you can continue paying this interest quarterly.

The Length of the Consolidation Process Varies

Generally, it takes 60-90 days to complete the consolidation process. Processing may take longer if your Application/Promissory Note is incomplete or if your loan holder(s) does not reply promptly to the request for loan pay-off information. For additional help with lender issues contact the Ombudsman's office of the U.S. Department of Education.
