Checklist
- Have your federal PIN available.
Request a duplicate PIN online www.pin.ed.gov
- Gather loan history (access on the web at www.nslds.ed.gov using your federal PIN). You will need to know the name and address of all lenders as well as your principle balances and any unpaid interest amounts. Your social security number is the account number for your loan.
- Apply on
the web or download
paper application. Don't forget the
instruction
sheet! You
can also apply by phone if you are consolidating only
Direct Loans. Print and read "Rights
and Responsibilities as a Borrower".
- Mail your completed signed application to Direct Loans by May
1.
- An in-school consolidation will keep your subsidized loans interest free until repayment begins. Any unsubsidized loans will continue to accrue interest and you can continue paying this interest quarterly.
The Length of the Consolidation Process Varies
Generally, it takes 60-90 days to complete
the consolidation process. Processing may take longer
if your Application/Promissory Note is incomplete or
if your loan holder(s) does not reply promptly to the
request for loan pay-off information. For additional
help with lender issues contact the Ombudsman's office
of the U.S. Department of Education.
